LAMP, is this geek stuff again?

Yes it's geeky but in a good way. It saves you money!

Software is usually licenced, sometimes it can cost thousands and with some server software you have to pay every year!

With LAMP there is no licence fee which makes it much more affordable. You only pay for the expertise in setting it up and configuring the system when you need.

What do you mean by "Server" ?
A server is a computer that has one job, to 'serve' files whenever asked. The files could be web pages, a web server, or it could be the information a file contains, a database server.

There are lots of database and web servers but for LAMP we use Apache and MySQL, both are free to use "Open Source" applications. There are millions of websites using this trusted combination.

What do you mean Open Source?
This means the authors of the software have allowed the source code to be published so anyone can examine it. Unlike proprietory or bespoke software where the source code is regarded as [trade] secret and protected by law.

What is Apache?
Apache is server spftware and the "A" of Lamp. It is arguably the most popular web server used today.

What is MySQL?
MySQL is the "M" of LAMP and is one of the most robust database servers available. It is highly capable and is even used to power some of the google websites.

What is LAMP?
LAMP stands for LINUX, APACHE, MySQL and PHP.

  • Linux is a free to use operating system (Windows is an operating system, so is OSX). Linux is similar to UNIX, a commercial strength system developed in the 1960's. It is highly regarded for security and robustness.
  • Apache is arguably the most popular web server used today. It servers countless millions of pages every hour.
  • MySQL is one of the most robust database servers available. It is highly capable and is even used to power some of the google websites.
  • PHP is a programming language used to bring your
website to life. For example, using php we can tell
you that according to the web server the time in
    the UK is: 01:13 am

Anything else?
Yes, loads and loads but we promised not to be geeky!
Here are a few things you may have heared of that might make
a big difference to your website...

JAVA and JavaScript
People often confuse JavaScript with JAVA, they are actually two different things. JAVA is a programming language often used in enterprise web applications, big sites with big budgets. It is extremly powerful and versatile. For instance, the applications you may have on your mobile phone might be written in JAVA.

In contrast to this JavaScript is a 'Low Level' language used mainly to add interaction to web pages. A good example might be when you submit a form on a website, JavaScript can check to make sure you've entered information in the right place.

AJAX
AJAX is not a language per sey but a way of using JavaScript in conjunction with other languages to make a website even more dynamic. Google and Yahoo have made terrific advances in on-line applications using AJAX.

FLASH
Flash is great, you can do allsorts of interesting effects and create an almost "TV " feel. It's not for everyone though, there are some draw-backs to using flash. You might notice important websites either avoid it altogether or use it only when appropriate. Flash has been around a long time but still has reliability issues. Having said that, sometimes for 'some' pages only flash will do!
